Steve Chan

Dr. Steve Chan is a data scientist and researcher focused on the nexus of information science, Artificial Intelligence (AI), data analytics, and decision science.

He has served as a reviewer for 42 peer-reviewed publications, which include 10 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)/ Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) journals and 7 IEEE conference proceedings. He is the author/co-author of 92 book chapters, journal articles, and conference papers, which include 38 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) papers. For the majority of the refereed publications, he was first author, and 20 of these received Best Paper/Best Presentation. He is an inventor with 14 granted international and U.S. patents, and he is an alumnus of MIT and Harvard. He remains a dedicated researcher and is always striving to learn and contribute to society-at-large.

He has extensive experience in AI/Machine Learning (ML), numerical method implementations, hardware and software engineering, systems design, and laboratory/project management. His interests and proficiencies reside in innovation, technology, and analytics visualization (the art and science of hybridizing advanced analytics with scientific data visualizations to facilitate the decision engineering pipeline).

Even while living in San Diego, he split his time between the East Coast and West Coast. For example, while working at IBM, among other responsibilities, he managed IBM centers/labs (e.g., IBM Center for Resiliency and Sustainability), which had locations in the major tech hubs of Cambridge (e.g., located at 1 Rogers Street) and San Diego/La Jolla (e.g., located at 4660 La Jolla Village Drive, 4365 Executive Drive, and 4275 Executive Square).

More recently, he has had the privilege and honor of serving as Chief Scientist/Principal Investigator for a number of governmental and industrial reports on AI.
