Hi, I'm an IT Director in a world class IT company who thrives on technology and often getting the best out of the most obscure ideas. From my early days of electronics and computers (taking my radio apart and learning to code wtih my trusty ZX81) all the way through to finding new crazy stuff to do with my Raspberry Pi collection, it always leaves me wanting more.
Learning how things really work allows my practical skills to take hold and I find myself able to lend my hand to most activities (but not ironing, that's way too complicated). You never know, those welding skills I have may come in good use one day! But generally, if it's broke, try fixing it. Incredibly I have found that it is possible to make things much better than they were originally designed. And that's what starts to make me tick.
It's not all about being hands on practical. Work has moved me on from that. But being able to look a littleways into the future of technology keeps the ideas flowing. I distinctly remember raving about my ZX81 to some friends and imagining children of the future carrying around similar sized devices with built in screens from class to class and doing their homework on it. And here we are, with tablet computers all the rage in schools everywhere.
While dreams helped to shape my future, my future continues to feed my dreams. Today is just a step into my next dream awaiting to be discovered.
Whether it's working for a world wide IT corporation or dabbling with some home project, I'm always seeing both scenarios as the next challenge. There are of course some great disctractions along the way including family, cycling, modelling, and fund raising. They all play their part in keeping my world spinning.
