Steven Thomson

St Andrews, Scotland

I'm a PhD student studying theoretical condensed matter physics at the University of St Andrews, the Scottish Condensed Matter Doctoral Training Centre (CM-DTC), and the ISIS Neutron and Muon Facility (Rutherford Appleton Labs). I get around a lot!

My main areas of interest are quantum phase transitions and quantum criticality, which essentially boils down to researching the crazy, counterintuitive world of quantum mechanics in a fantastically accessible experimental framework. I don't think anyone can claim they really understand quantum mechanics, but I do very much enjoy being puzzled by it! You can find a list of my publications, talks and posters on my website.

Outside of the daily grind of PhD life, I'm heavily involved in science communication. I'm a STEM Ambassador, working to inspire young people to take up science and technology subjects in schools. I write for Sci@StAnd, blog at physicssteve.co.uk and for 2 years I was the Outreach Co-ordinator for the St Andrews branch of the CM-DTC (see our website for further details on our activities). I'm also a member of the Association of British Science Writers.
