His rise to noteworthy status as a journalist began in 1990 when he stepped into the role of Senior Reporter with the Sunday People Newspaper. At the time, with more than 3 million newspapers sold each week, the circulation for Sunday People was more substantial than that of the Sunday Mirror. He stayed with the publication for five years before joining the Daily Record Newspaper as Deputy News Editor. For six years, Steve stayed with the newspaper, which was leading in circulation at that time.
