An answer to 'Joeseph' who asked.... "What's all this?" ... having seen my Soutar Fine Art facebook page...

Hiya Joseph!
Many thanks for your kind response to my work on the website. The website isn't 'officially' launched as yet so your feedback is most welcome and very useful. I think that allot of what you ask will ultimately be covered on the site but as you've taken the time and trouble to get in touch, I'll endeavour to fill in a few of the blanks.
The short answer to all your questions is, "Yes, they might well be taken, or read as 'Surreal'. Some deal with purely emotive reactions to certain situations I have encountered and might well be termed 'Abstract'. As I progress through my time on this here planet and the work and me 'move on' then it would be fair to say that ALL the paintings are experimental to some degree or other.
I'd ask you not to 'overthink' your reaction to the work; I try to create paintings that reveal themselves over time. They are not a quick hit.
They are however an attempt at communicating to you and others, maybe through the juxtaposition of previously less considered concepts or through whatever techniques or approaches I think appropriate to the subject, a question or a standpoint or an angle that maybe you haven't visited before. It's the beginning of a visual dialogue with the emotions.
But this explanation of 'process' mustn't get in the way of your reactions to the work. I could go on and on and on for pages about what's to be found in the weight of the brushstroke or the fragility of a line but that'd somewhat defeat the purpose of doing the painting in the first place. It's great that you want to know more and that you have been moved to ask. Maybe you could get to the New York show and see the work 'up close and personal'.
At any rate, I hope that this has gone a little way to answering some of your concerns and hasn't put you off the whole idea.
Thanks again,
Yours aye,
Stewart
