Charly Eves

My art work has been heavily influenced by looking at traditional embroidery (from the medieval era to the Victorians) and modern feminism and self-identity. This body of work was influenced heavily by reading The Subversive Stitch by Rozsika Parker. From these influences, I focused on self-identity, as opposed to basing identity on the ideas of others. Because of this I consider my work to be feminist.

I work with a combination of wet and needle felt with traditional and contemporary embroidery in the form of sculptural pieces. I feel that the media that I work with is intrinsic to my body of work as I am working with traditional ‘Womans Work’ (home crafts such as embroidery) but subverting it to use as a method of self-empowerment. With my work I wish to demonstrate the power and beauty of individuality and self-identity.
