Sufiya Abdur-Rahman

Sufiya is a writer and teacher. She writes about issues of family, race, religion and culture. Her work has been published in newspapers and magazines including the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Washington City Paper and The Source, and her "This I Believe" essay was featured on NPR.

Sufiya earned an MFA in creative nonfiction from Goucher College. There, she began a memoir that she continues to write. Growing up as the child of African-American converts to Islam, the book tells the story of her efforts to understand her parents' experience and, at the same time, her own. Sufiya lives in suburban Maryland with her husband and son.
