ANNA JOHN

Writer in Washington, DC

Update: After 20 years in Chocolate City, I recently moved back to the state where I was born and raised, to write and reunite my pack in L.A.

Bio: I am an erstwhile journalist. Occasional comedian. Eternal activist. Current Upright Citizen. Boxing writer and photographer. Expert on all things trivial as well as most things South Asian American. Alumna of UC Davis, GWU, and best of all, Delta Gamma. Forever vegetarian, Greek Orthodox, and Malayalee.

A fan of fast cars, French bulldogs, fashion, feminism, and alliteration. Honorary Persian Jew. Quatrilingual. Your Velouria. Erstwhile hair model and accidental pageant queen (my talent: stand-up comedy). Future Real Housewife of either Detroit or San Francisco.

Devoted to a poky little puppy (#DaenerysTheFrenchie) and a cancer-stricken rescue mutt named Jub Jub, who wears my vintage pearls. Crafter of creative non-fiction, essays, short stories, and poetry. Painter of acrylic, mixed media, and watercolor dreams. Rueful caretaker of one criminally-neglected art journal.

Currently: screenwriting and UCB.

Previously: cofounder of and columnist at the legendary Sepia Mutiny (RIP), Senior Reporter at NPR's Project Argo.

Overheard on WAMU, WNYC, PRI, SAJA Radio, and The BBC.

Published at TheAtlantic.com, NPR, Mic, Ring Magazine, India Abroad, The Root, The Raw Story, India West, India Currents, The Sacramento Bee, The Queensberry Rules, BlogHer, and Rediff.com.

Quoted by Buzzfeed, Racialicious, The Huffington Post, New York magazine, Firstpost, and The Frisky.

I love: milky coffee, reading, fighting for the underdog, six-speed manual transmissions, public radio, hydrangeas, 120 Minutes-era music, my Venice jungalow, pop culture, curly hair, criminally expensive makeup, farmers markets, brunch (it's often the only vegetarian-friendly meal at exciting restaurants), the E46M3, the east coast, elevators, Jacks in the summer and wellies in the winter, The Sound of Music, painting, koi ponds, fresh Concord grapes, ASOIAF, nugs, convertibles, large-brimmed hats, cardamom gelato, '50's era Mercedes (Adenauer, Ponton, Gullwing, 190 SL), fresh snow, kindness, and most museums.
