Choodamani Parajuli

I was born and spent the first half of my career in Nepal with a company called Ankur Infotech that provides software for banks. Five years later, I was assisting a team of 12 with my daily duties and had developed a deep understanding of how core banking systems, payment gateways, and accounting processes really worked — not just on paper.
The latter – Customer Support Supervisor – was where I was responsible for daily activities of the team and ensuring our banking clients received uniform, high-quality customer support. Prior to that, when something would go wrong with a transaction, or a fundamental part of the banking process, I was the guy clients would call to fix it, which meant learning these payment gateways and accounting rules on the job.
I have relocated to Sydney to develop on this and am now studying my Masters of Professional Accounting degree at King's Own Institute. It's really just consolidating all of the areas of the job where I only had a bit of a brush with before — AASB/IFRS reporting, macro-economic analysis, business communication — and getting ready to move into accounting, audit, or banking here in Australia.
What I'm really interested in is where accurate numbers start to make better decisions. On the surface, financial reporting standards and compliance are dull, but they're the basis on which a business can depend on its own data, and I have to say that years of working within banking software has taught me how much a business depends on the harmonization of accounting and technology. It's the point of view I want to take to a graduate position.
That is what five years in banking software has taught me, and that MPA is teaching me — together, that's what I bring to the table.
