I am a graduate student in Computer Science in Stony Brook University. Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and NLP are the subjects which have inspired me to the highest level in my graduate courses. The power of these subjects to solve and analyze complex problems amazed me which eventually helped me to fetch the highest ranks in both. Apart from these courses I have also attended the lectures by Professor Andrew which is available online in ml-class.org to gain further insight into the subject. My experience in these ML and NLP has been thrilling at each step and I want to continue pursuing higher studies in these areas. One of my projects in machine learning was to build a recommendation engine for hangout spots based on data from social networks like Facebook/Google+. I collected the data using Facebook API's and normalized it to remove redundancies while fitting into the model. Two different algorithms, Classification and Regression Trees (CART) and Support Vector Machines (SVM) were evaluated. The data for each user is converted into feature vectors. A user's feature is a representation of each of pieces of information collected from his/her profile like gender, age, location, relationship status, movie likes, comments, friends, music likes etc. The basic approach was to rank the user's album based on like and the sentiments of the comments received for an album or photo and then recommend the album's name to the user. We collected several positive and negative sentiments and trained our dataset based on that. This project really taught me what kind of approaches or models has to be applied for a problem and in the process gave me an in depth knowledge of various other models like HMMs,Viterbi Algorithms, Bayesian Networks, collaborative filtering , KNN, EM etc. Apart from this I have done some mini projects like email filtering using NAÏVE Bayes on data sets available from http://spamassassin.apache.org/publiccorpus/, recognition of handwritten digits using various algorithms like SVM’s, K nearest neighbor and Bayesian Network. I believe all my experience will really help me contribute towards the projects involved in the internship period.
