Susan Longley

Serving as Judge of Probate since 2005, Susan Longley hears cases in the Waldo County Probate Court located in Belfast, Maine. In this voter-elected position, Judge Longley provides judgment for family-related matters, such as adoptions, guardianships, wills, name changes, and financial conservator appointments.

As a judge, Susan Longley maintains responsibility for ensuring that all citizens receive fair, efficient, and meaningful proceedings in the courtroom. As part of this responsibility, she provides access to user-friendly filing forms for all parties involved in cases. Judge Longley also developed an electronic case management system for the Waldo County Probate Court. This new system fosters accountability and allows for constant tracking of trials. Beyond her position at the Waldo County Probate Court, Judge Longley previously served as a Maine state senator and educator.

Judge Longley's involvement in public policy and law traces back to her days as a student at Mount Holyoke College. While studying history and political science, she completed United Nations internships in Paris and New York City. She earned a Master of Arts in History from the University of Maine and earned a degree in law from Washington, DC's Catholic University. During her time at the Catholic University, she performed legal research for the National Education Association, covered US Supreme Court cases for NPR, and organized a seminar on homeless law. She graduated from the School of Public Policy in 1988.

Outside of her professional work, Susan Longley spends her time in the outdoors. A licensed Maine guide, she regularly hikes and skis cross-country. She also enjoys gardening. Grace O'Malley, her dog who is a mix between a Labrador and a Golden Retriever, is a frequent companion of Judge Longley's outdoor activities.
