I have always been interested in fine art and graphic arts, and after high school attended Seattle Central Community College where I received an Associate of Applied Science degree in Graphic Design and Illustration. After working in that field for 5 years I found I was not getting the enjoyment or meaning I wanted out of my work. My husband and had our children, now 3 year old twin daughters, and at that time I decided that I would like to use my talent and passion for art to teach children. After searching for the right program, and with the help of a very good friend, I ended up deciding on SPU's School of Education, for a number of reasons including it's fine reputation and wonderful program built for busy parents like myself. I chose the field of education because as a parent and informed citizen I believe the education of every child is the foundation for a better world for all. I chose Visual Arts for my endorsement area for obvious reasons, but also because I think this area is under appreciated and could use a teacher that will not only teach the skills and styles of art, but also incorporate history, cultural studies, and even some philosophy into the curriculum. I would like to teach in the Jr. High grade levels, mainly because this age group tends to have had less experience in the arts and I think I can help students get excited about trying new art forms and understand why art is such an important aspect of life and culture. I really enjoy the older students because they are more able to communicate complex topics and ideas, which I find exciting. Besides my own children, I recently have had the priveledge of teaching and volunteering at two schools, one elementary and another Jr. High. I designed my own lessons and assisted in others and also got to simply observe.I was born and raised in the Seattle area, but I have also had many out-of-state and out-of-country travel experiences. My husband, daughters and I currently reside in Kenmore, where I have been an online student for the past 2 and a half years while raising my girls. We all have a passion for the outdoors, we love finding new parks and places around town to visit. I personally am active, practicing Yoga and I also enjoy backpacking and riding my bike. I am excited to continue my education at SPU and am looking forward to working with the rest of the students and staff! Thanks, Susanna
