Sustainability for Self-Interest
Hi, I’m Chris!
I’m working on a book exploring sustainability through self-interest—highlighting how it impacts our health, finances, and quality of life. Rather than focusing on “saving the planet,” I show how sustainability benefits each of us in practical ways.
Background and Shift in Focus
After 15 years in commercial real estate and investment management, I pivoted and pursued a master’s in Sustainable Environments. This opened my eyes to the urgent need for change we have to tackle our environmental issues. Working as a sustainability consultant afterwards revealed that focusing solely on emissions overlooks other critical environmental threats. This shift in perspective led me to advocate for more balanced and comprehensive approaches to sustainability.
Agriculture and Regenerative Farming
My experiences on my uncle’s farm also revealed the immense challenges faced by small farmers. I believe regenerative and organic farming practices are essential for a sustainable future. Unlike factory farming, which relies on monocrops, pesticides, and antibiotics, regenerative farming preserves soil, improves water and air quality, and empowers communities.
Studies suggest regenerative practices could feed up to 12 billion people, creating a resilient food system that protects ecosystems and supports farmers both socially and financially. Embracing these practices is key to restoring balance in agriculture.
Systemic Change over Individual Action
While individual actions matter, they aren’t enough. Nearly 60% of emissions come from industries—not households—driven by policies and corporate practices that prioritise profit over people (waste & harmful chemicals too). True change requires transforming these systems. Grassroots movements, community-led efforts, shareholder activism, and mindful consumer choices can all pressure industries and policymakers to adopt sustainable practices. Local action can drive systemic shifts that make sustainability a priority across sectors.
The Role of Self-Interest
Sustainability messaging can feel distant, but focusing on how it improves our own lives makes it practical and personal. If self-interest led us here, it can also be the key to finding solutions.
Let’s connect if you’d like to learn more about sustainability (from a self-interest perspective) and/or creating change together!
