I kicked off my working life as a piano teacher with some amazing students to keep me in check (and today, there are investment analysts, high-end fashion designers and internationally recognised dancers amongst those I am honoured to have taught in their formative years). I also ran the drama department at a primary school – a little bit like glee club for ages four and up. Throughout these years, my alterego played rock violin (hooked up to a rack of fx pedals) of an evening in Sydney rock band Aunt Jennifer's Tigers.
After 10 years of teaching, I made use of my original journalism degree to head into the publishing industry, launching a free arts 'zine', InSide On, before working in book publishing, then lifestyle magazines at Australian Consolidated Press in Sydney, then Bauer and NatMags (now Hearst magazines) in London. I was also managing editor across a range of luxury titles with a contract publisher in London's City, and spent four fabulous years as deputy editor of Junior magazine ("the world's finest parenting magazine"), where I had the opportunity to relaunch the magazine's website – twice.
I love print, but the hard fact is, I spend far more time experiencing the world online. And so it came to pass that after I myself became a parent, I decided it was time to launch MyLittleStyleFile – an editorial website showcasing outstanding designs for children and families with the additional bonus of free-to-use moodboard and travel planning tools. And I guess the litmus test is my three-year-old son who loves everything he sees on the site and wants it immediately pinned to his "Letter to Santa" moodboard. As for me… well I'm just relieved I don't have to try and remember where I've filed all those clippings from magazines, papers and the internet, or what I should be buying come December 20!
Future plans? It's a wide old horizon…
