Swansboro Gardeners
Midlothian Turnpike
This elegant old school, Swansboro Elementary in Richmond, VA, is now graced with its own vegetable and flower garden, plus 2 smaller gardens as well. In 2007 the Richmond Audubon Society started a garden in the courtyard at the school. As can be seen from this picture, at that time the courtyard was completely bare. We were birders and thought we would never see a single bird in the courtyard! (These days we have birds galore including hummingbirds, goldfinches, and many others.) In 2007 with the help of first and second graders, we began planting vegetables and flowers. Eventually we landscaped the whole courtyard mainly with native flowers and trees, as well as raised beds where the students could plant both vegetables and flowers.
Later with the help of the Salisbury Garden Club we planted an "Art Garden." This garden contains flowers made famous by artists such as Van Gogh and Georgia O'Keeffe.
On the Midlothian side of the campus, we have planted sunflowers, liatris, and an apple tree.
