· Performed exploratory research to determine if DoSomething.org should create a 501(c)(4) affiliate to use lobbying and political activity to augment its current efforts to push for systemic change.
o Interviewed ~30 representatives and attorneys from other nonprofits; gathered information and anecdotal experience about 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations, and PACs.
o Researched tax and campaign finance law, the IRS, and the FEC related to 501(c)(4) organizations.
o Formulated a SWOT analysis and cost estimates, and recommended a high-level action plan for DoSomething.org to engage in politics on behalf of its members.
o Presented findings and analysis to DoSomething.org staff; fielded questions and led discussion.
o Deliverable: 35-page report and 3-page executive summary for COO and CEO to present to Board of Directors for final decision on next steps.
