Duy Nguyen

Brussels (Belgium)

Duy was born in Brussels (Belgium) in 1990, from a traditional Asian family of modest condition. Showing very soon a keen interest for maths and sciences in general, Duy also evinced an affinity for old languages such as Ancient Greek and Latin (he was amongst the Belgian Top 10 for a Latin-French translation competition in 2007), and Germanic languages such as Dutch, German and English.

Furthermore, Duy had always been interested by Asian culture from a very young age; he eventually wrote an extensive 80-page case study on the Japanese society in the framework of a final year dissertation during high school. Appreciated by his fellow classmates and his teachers alike, Duy received diverse honorific awards, including the Alumni Award of Merit of the Athénée Robert Catteau in Brussels, which granted him a full 5-year university scholarship at the Brussels School of Engineering. He graduated summa cum laude in 2013, with a MSc in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering.

After a first successful internship in the Smart Systems & Energy Technology division of IMEC (Interuniversity Micro-Electronics Centre), a world-leading research institute in nano-electronics and nano-technology, Duy got the opportunity to present his work in prestigious conferences of the IEEE, viz. the WIC/IEEE Benelux symposium on Information Theory and Signal Processing, and the PIMRC'13 (Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications Conference) in London.

His greatest life achievement thus far is his participation to the Vulcanus program in Japan, an incredibly selective program co-financed by the European Commission and the Japanese Ministry of Economy. This yearly program is aimed at skilled European students in engineering and offers industrial placements in leading Japanese companies.

Currently, he is working in one of the special research groups of NTT Communication Science Laboratories in Atsugi-shi, Kanagawa, performing experimental research on visible light communication technology.

During his spare time, Duy likes to spend simple moments of joy with his family and friends, keep improving his language skills, travel and discover new places and people, and bring back precious photo memories shot with his Canon DLSR.
