The history of this area dates back to the period prior to the 19 century when the site was inhabited by Native Americans with the Puyallup people being the predominant ones. The first non-indigenous contact the area had was in the 1850s when Nicholas Delin, a Swede built a water-powered sawmill on a creek near the head of commencement bay. Small Settlements were established around this place but it was abandoned during the Indian War.
After the war, Job Carr a veteran of the civil war arrived the area and built a cabin there with the aim of making profit from selection of the site as a terminus of the transcontinental road. Later, this settlement was sold to a developer named Morton M. McCarver who named this new project Tacoma city.
