Tafsir al-Maturidi— translated by Dr Yusof Mutahar — is a groundbreaking project that brings one of the earliest and most important works of classical Qur’anic exegesis into the English language with unprecedented clarity and depth. For the first time, the full theological, linguistic, and rational insights of Imam al-Maturidi are being presented in a comprehensive English format, allowing readers worldwide to access a tradition that has shaped the intellectual world of the Hanafi–Maturidi heritage for over a millennium.

Imam Abu Mansur al-Maturidi (d. 333 AH) is regarded as one of the founding architects of classical Islamic theology, offering a refined synthesis between revelation and reason. His approach emphasised intellectual responsibility, rational reflection, moral accountability, and deep fidelity to the Qur’an. His tafsir, Ta’wilat Ahl al-Sunnah—commonly known as Tafsir al-Maturidi—is among the earliest surviving Qur’anic commentaries grounded in theological analysis, linguistic precision, and philosophical depth. Despite its central role in shaping the Hanafi intellectual world, it has remained largely inaccessible to non-Arabic readers—until now.

Guided by the rigorous academic discipline of Dr Yusof Mutahar, whose authorised ijazah and Master’s degree in Islamic Studies reinforce the scholarly integrity of this work, the translation preserves the nuance, structure, and intellectual rigour of the classical text while expressing it in elegant, accessible English. Dr Mutahar’s approach stands out for its precision, its faithful verse-by-verse method, and its commitment to presenting the tafsir exactly as it appears in the original—without summary, reduction, or omission.

Upon completion, this project will stand as the largest single-author English tafsir of the entire Qur’an ever produced—surpassing every complete Qur’anic commentary written by a single scholar in the English language, with a final length expected to exceed 20,000 pages. This monumental undertaking represents a historic contribution to classical Islamic scholarship and a transformative resource for students, researchers, educators, and readers across the world.

Through this work, Dr Yusof Mutahar revives a foundational legacy of the Muslim scholarly tradition, making accessible the profound reasoning, theological clarity, and Qur’anic insight that define the Maturidi school. This translation is set to become a lasting reference for generations—a milestone in the preservation, revival, and transmission of classical Islamic learning.
