Take Kare is an indiepop project by Northeast LA-based Filipinx-Chinese songwriter, Karen Joyce. Coloring singable melodies with jazz harmony and idiosyncratic lyricism, their music transmits an emotive intensity, tempered with self-awareness, and a sincere hope for healing. In its live group configuration, Take Kare features an eclectic mix of notable underground LA musicians from the jazz, r&b, and post-rock scene. Their debut single, “Demise,” was performed to a sold-out audience at LA’s Non Plus Ultra and they are currently completing their long-anticipated EP.
In addition to music, Karen Joyce makes mental health-themed art & zines as “Yellow Stained Blue,” which is aptly named to represent an Asian person living with mental and chronic illness. They are also the author of “Stage Fright” which talks about performance anxiety from a decolonizing lens and features advice from women & queer musicians-of-color. Whether it’s music or art, Karen hopes that their creativity will inspire vulnerability and help others to feel less alone.
