I am a critical black feminist social work practitioner, and researcher, who practices anti-oppressive measures, primarily in relation to minority communities.
I hold a BA Hons Sociology degree, with a minor in Legal Studies and Criminology from the University of Waterloo, 2005, and a Masters in Social Work (Critical) from York University, 2010.
My research and MSW Thesis, focused on education in the minority communities. The research explored the many levels in which racism exists in the education system and how it affects the success of black students, especially females, of graduating from the system. It explored how racism is embedded in education policies and practices, and the impact these policies have on black students. In addition, it looked at the disengagement of black students based on numerous factors and lastly, the resiliency of black students and those who are able to be successful regardless of the barriers.
I am currently working in the child welfare field, where I continue to work towards my goals of improving the lives of minority children, families and communities.
NEW OUTLOOK COUNSELLING: Private Practice
My services include individual and couples psychotherapy. My approach to treatment is cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT).
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a psycho-therapeutic approach that addresses dysfunctional emotions, behaviours, and cognitions through a goal-oriented, systematic process. It is backed by clinical research that has shown it to be one of the most effective treatments. In many cases it is as effective or better than medication treatment.
Solution Focused Therapy (SFBT) is future-focused, goal-directed, and focuses on solutions, rather than on the problems that brought clients to seek therapy.
