I believe that effective educational leaders understand how education can move a family from the mill hill to Chapel Hill in two generations. They understand that honoring commitments to big ideas is not always easy, and that adding value to others benefits everyone in an organization. Like my grandfather, they have the courage to turn down the washing machine salesman in order to honor the promise to buy his son a piano. As a result, my father learned how to play the piano and became the first in our family to go to college where he majored in music. Because of these commitments, his children all learned to sing, all went to college, and all became teachers. And we do not miss that washing machine one bit.

I believe that every child from the mill hill has the potential to do great things. And I want to help build schools that commit to a vision that emphasizes every effort, for every child, everyday.
