When I was five years old, my cousins and I played a game of ‘hide and seek’ that took a turn for the worse. In a rush to hide in a linen closet, a door accidentally slammed onto my right thumb. The nail was so injured that it fell off. As it happens, at the time I was learning to hold a pencil and write at school. This is the story of how I became left-handed. Since I couldn’t bear to wait for the nail to heal and risk falling behind in reading and writing, I switched hands and became a ‘leftie,’ and I’ve been that way ever since.

Fortunately, that same perseverance, adaptability, and passion for learning have remained with me my entire life. These traits, combined with a dedication to community service, have led me to my career choice of public health and healthcare. My goals are to do meaningful work to address the root causes of poor health and improve the quality of healthcare that people receive.

The incident with my thumbnail wasn’t all bad. A fresh, new nail did grow in eventually. More difficult life experiences have come my way since. But, like the thumbnail incident, they have all become manageable and taught me valuable lessons about learning to adapt to change, being flexible, and working hard to persevere. I apply these in my work every day and am excited by new challenges.

When I’m not working on healthcare projects, I like to travel, try new restaurants (upholding a standard only a chef's daughter could!), and practice mindfulness as a tool for self-awareness as part of my journey of continuous self-improvement. I also like to find ways to stimulate my entrepreneurial spirit. Right now, I’m learning about property investment, custom homes, and new small business ventures in my spare time.
