2015 might be the year I graduated high school and started college, but it was also the same year I started my collegiate Ultimate Frisbee career. I was first introduced to the sport at a summer camp at the young age of 13 years old. Because I was only there for 3 weeks and it was my first time seeing the sport, I thought seeing it again would be a rare occurrence. Even though I hadn’t touched another circular 175 g flying disc, a Frisbee, for another year and a half, I couldn’t have been more wrong about my assumptions.
One could say my high school days were never quite complete unless I went outside to toss with a few friends; a routine which started spring semester of my freshman year when my friend dragged me out to what I thought would be a useless club fair. From then on out it began- we signed a form and gave it a shot. Voila! We were hooked!
Months passed with the same weekly routine. The final bell of a Friday afternoon would ring and while everyone else would be packing up to head on home for the weekend, I had other plans. I’d grab my presumably empty water bottle and head over to the water fountain to fill it up, all while jittering with the excitement to play pick-up Ultimate Frisbee with my friends. That’s right, I’d play pick-up once a week and toss every other day. I couldn’t help it, it’s what I looked forward to every 8 AM Monday morning and in the middle of every long study session.
A simple taste of the sport over a 3-week summer camp almost subliminally convinced me into saying yes to trying it out almost two years later. And now, here I sit in college, playing on the team of my dreams and etching a little bit more to my story every day.
