Tara Landers

I chose to pursue a career in journalism because I see the influence of media as a tool to advance progressive justice on the global stage, a flashlight to shine a bright beam on any dark corner of the world to illuminate tragedy, violence, or corruption with the public awareness to incite change. This dynamic aspect is nowhere more apparent than in the reportage and journalistic treatment of global justice and foreign affairs, as they are something with which most people have little direct experience, so that the responsibility of the journalist—and the capacity to inspire progress—is all the greater. In domestic affairs unbiased journalism is imperative to a fair democracy, and I believe successful reporting that engages the public audience with clear explanations of pertinent issues in our society has the unique ability to turn the passively governed into well-informed thinkers, voters, and revolutionaries.

While I strive for the opportunity to work within the media as an influential force for good, I have many interests and a broad disciplinary background. I am also majoring in art history, a passion of mine, which has given me an extensive knowledge of world cultures throughout the course of history. I have two AA degrees in english and philosophy which have taught me critical thinking and logic skills. I am also involved with several Berkeley publications and have experience with Photoshop. I believe my academic grounding in such a wide array of subjects has made me a well-rounded writer with an insightful cultural perspective. I am contesting for an internship at the Huffington Post to gain professional experience that would be indespensible to my development and future in journalism.
