Tara Zuk
Program Support Teacher in Fort Liard, Northwest Territories, Canada
I was born in Liverpool, England, during a snow storm.
I'm very happily married to a Canadian and so we've lived in Canada as well as the UK.
I currently work in the community of Fort Liard, in the Northwest Territories.
In my time, I have come face-to-face with black bears, brown bears, wolves, spirit bears, orcas, dolphins, humpback whales, deer, wolverines, bison and moose in their natural habitats. Looking to expand that range of wildlife!
I have walked through blizzards at -40ºC, made it through a forest wildfire, survived 2 large earthquakes and a severe hurricane (as well as a milder one!), climbed mountains, made it 90 miles in a tiny fishing boat through waves sometimes over 12 feet high, flown over glaciers in float planes during storms, driven the Dempster Highway, and been ice skating on a frozen lake in the Arctic Circle.
I am a reader and a thinker. I adore philosophy and psychology. I'm crazy about art, music, movies, photography, theatre and sports.
I am an environmental pedestrian and a pescetarian.
I'm an open-minded free-thinker.
I've been a teacher for 24 years and I am passionate about my work in education. I have gained international recognition for my research into aboriginal cognitive tools, curriculum adaptation and increasing student engagement and achievement.
I have a MAEd in Inclusive Education.
I want to do my PhD more than anything in the world.
I write. I began with poetry and have been published a few times. I'm starting to move into the realm of prose, still finding my way and learning. I had my first article published in 2014 and I am still publishing regularly.
I am addicted to music! Bob Dylan's music is my main interest, but I have studied the history of music and love many styles and genres. I play the guitar, harmonica, mandolin, Irish whistle, aboriginal traditional drum, recorder. I play in a band - folk, blues, country and pop, and our first album was released in 2017 - 'One Weekend In June.'
I don't like the city (not like some folks do) and love the countryside. I love the smell of the ocean and the sound of a train in the distance.
