Bio - Poet , storyteller and American critic . His parents, theater actors , died when he was still a child. Edgar Allan Poe was raised by John Allan , a businessman of Richmond, 1815-1820 and lived with him and his wife in the UK, where he began his education .
After returning to America, Poe continued to study in private schools and attended the University of Virginia, but in 1827 his gambling and drinking led to her expulsion. He left shortly after the employee position assigned to it by his adoptive father, and traveled to Boston , where her first book, Tamerlane and Other Poems published anonymously .
He then joined the army , where he remained two years. In 1829 he published his second book of poems , Al Aaraf , and obtained a position at the Military Academy at West Point, from which a few months later was expelled for dereliction of duty.
In 1832 , and after the publication of his third book , Poems , he moved to Baltimore , where he married his young cousin Virginia Clem , who had only fourteen years old. By this time he entered as an editor at the newspaper Southern Baltimore Messenger, and later in several magazines in Philadelphia and New York City where he had settled with his wife in 1837.
His work as outrageous and often incisive literary critic earned him some notoriety , and original insights about the story and the nature of poetry would not fail to gain influence over time. The long illness of his wife in their marriage became a bitter experience ; when she died in 1847 , his tendency to alcoholism and drug abuse worsened . On October 3, 1849 , Poe was found on the streets of Baltimore delirious . He was taken by his old friend James E. Snodgrass to Washington College Hospital, where the Sunday, October 7 , died at 5:00 am. At no time was able to explain how he had come to such a situation, why or why wearing clothes that were not his .
