York Information

The City of York was originally called the Roman city of Eboracum in 71 AD and York became the northern provincial capital in the Roman Empire. Constantine was declared Emperor in York in 306. After the decline of the Roman Empire, The City of York became the capital of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria.

York was invaded by the Vikings in the 9th century, and York bacame a Danish trading centre for two centuries until the Normans conquered England. Medieval York was England’s second largest city and York became wealthy on the wool trade. In the 15th century,York was involved in the War of the Roses, and Yorks city symbol is still a white rose. Henry VIII made York the capital of his northern church, and today’s York Minster is still one of the most powerful in the Church of England.

As north of Britain became more industrialised, York participated in playing a major role as a railroad hub with York Train Station being the worlds largest train station at the time. York Train Station and York were bombed during World War II, however, both York Train Station and the City of York survived and became the best preserved medieval city in England.

Today the City of York is heavily reliant on tourism as visitors walk on the cobbled streets of York and through lanes full of sloping timbered buildings. York is the most beautifully preserved city in Britain!
