Tena Pettis
Tena made her way into social media the way many people did in the early days, by connecting with friends online. She was an immediate aficionado. When an article titled something like "Jobs You Can Do If You Are Really Good at Facebook" landed in her lap, she knew it was somehow her ticket into becoming a successful entrepreneur.
Tena began asking friends and business owners what they thought of her idea of starting a company that helped businesses with their social media activity.
"The response wasn't great," Tena said. "People said, 'Really? You want to charge people to use Facebook? It's free!'"
Then another article came her way. This one helped you to calculate how old you would be when you could afford to retire, based on your current salary. "I was going to be something like 105," she said.
She got the nudge she needed from her biggest fan, her husband, who told her she had great potential and he knew she could make it work.
Tena launched tena.cious in August of 2009. And it has been a bronco ride, with giant leaps in accounts and business growth as companies scramble to keep up with the developments in social media for business while also running daily operations. She has become devoted to growing her clients' fan base, keeping her finger on the pulse of a company's social media activity and responding to clients' questions and comments.
"We like to post at certain times, and be at the top of the news feeds when people are most interested," Tena said. "We look through to see what types of posts get the most interaction. We are about engagement. We want the business to grow from this."
Yeah, she's passionate.
The Real Tena
Tena is magnetically drawn to people and real life socializing. "My husband and I love events. We're always planning something – a St. Paddy's Day event, an annual canoe trip. We go all out." Tena is also involved in church and bible studies, is a devoted mom, and is crazy about her husband. "We met in college, at Bemidji State. He was a football player, and I was on the dance team. We're such a fit! I really love my marriage. Not many people can say that out loud."
Tena's words to live by are 'Find joy in every moment of the journey.'
