Like tens of thousands of people around the UK, my Mum, Pamela Sutherland, was made redundant due to the economy tanking. She isn't the type to take a break though, oh no! She immediately went on a job hunt, sent her CV to recruiters, applied for every job she could. She got tons of positive responses and felt assured that this would be just a tiny blip in an otherwise constantly employed life.
But those positive responses never turned into actual job offers...
You're probably thinking, "There are thousands upon thousands of talented people who are out of work and struggling to get a toe back in the door. What makes your Mum so special?"
Well, (other than the fact that she's my Mum, which makes her very special to me) you see, my Mum has progressive Multiple Sclerosis. It's a particularly nasty disease that gets gradually worse over time and is incurable. She gets exhausted when moving around a lot, which has gotten to the point now that she can't leave her house. Regardless of her physical limitations, she's still very capable of working from home, which is hardly that uncommon these days. My Mum may have some movement boundaries, but she's still as smart and wonderful as she's always been!
The thing is, in today's tough job market, recruiters seem to not consider someone who can't physically come in for an interview. If you had to choose between two candidates to interview and one can't actually come in to meet you face-to-face, you're gonna go with the one who can, right?
I'll get to my point... (thanks for sticking around so far!) I need a little help. I think my Mum deserves to be given a chance, and I'm betting somewhere out there is someone with a job opening she'd be perfect for! If not you, maybe someone you know, or someone that knows someone you know?
So, if you're not in the position to offer her a job, all I'm asking is to please spread this out across the internets. Retweet, share, re-post, whatever it is you can do to share this with your networks. With a little love and kindness from you good people, add a big sprinkling of luck, hopefully this will fall under the gaze of someone with a generous spirit and an open job spot that's a perfect fit for my Mum!
Thanks all!
