HVAC-R Apprentice: Prerequisites & Qualifications
Considering a career in HVAC-R? It’s a demanding, hands-on field that requires mechanical aptitude, independence, and a strong work ethic. Here’s what you need to know to become an apprentice with a UA Local 516 contractor:
Qualifications
Education:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Required Courses:
- English 12
- Math 11 (Foundations or Pre-Calculus 11, Pre-Calculus recommended)
- Physics 11 or Chemistry 11
- Economic Theory or Law Studies 12 (recommended)
Driver’s License:
- A valid driver’s license and clean driving record are required for job site travel.
Skills & Traits
Mechanical & Electrical Aptitude:
- HVAC-R involves hands-on work with mechanical and electrical systems. If you're not comfortable with tools or electrical work, this trade may not be for you.
Physical Stamina:
- Prepare for long hours, physical labor, and exposure to various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, and rain.
Comfort with Solitude:
- Much of the work is independent. If you prefer constant social interaction, this may not be the right fit.
Work Environment & Expectations
Job Demands:
- Customer needs come first, and you may be required to stay after hours or be on-call for emergency services. Hours can be long and unpredictable.
Tools & Uniform:
- You must supply and maintain your own basic tools. A uniform is required, and you must maintain professionalism despite physical demands.
On-the-Job Learning:
- You’ll work directly with journeymen and gain hands-on experience in various environments, including ladders, scissor lifts, and rooftops.
Technical Training
Apprenticeship Levels:
The program includes 4 levels of technical training:
- Level 1: 6 weeks
- Level 2: 7 weeks
- Level 3: 10 weeks
- Level 4: 10 weeks
- Note: There may be a waitlist for technical training.
Math & Science:
- Strong math and science skills are crucial. We recommend Math Foundations 11 (minimum), Pre-Calculus 11 is preferred.
Additional Considerations
Weather & Conditions:
- Work is done outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme temperatures and rain, often on rooftops.
Customer Interaction:
- You’ll interact with customers, requiring professionalism, even in difficult situations.
