I like to teach/write/advocate for Sickle Cell Disease because it disturbs my spirit that I have encountered people who have referred SC "just a condition". It's not just a condition. It's a disease that affects a person's daily living. I've even been told.."Oh, it can't be that painful." or "You are being super dramatic. It's not that serious."
Living with SC Disease is a daily battle including being able to deal with negativity and being "labeled". Sickle Cell does not have to own me. I am not defined by my diagnosis nor does it determine my level of accomplishments and success.
