Thandazo Mahlangu is a passionate third-year Bachelor of Education student at the University of Johannesburg, specializing in English and Physical Education for the Senior and FET Phase. Originally from a rural village in Mpumalanga, Thandazo has always seen education as a powerful tool to overcome poverty—not just for herself, but for others in her community.
She achieved five distinctions in matric and began tutoring learners while still in school, partnering with various learning programs to support those facing academic challenges. Currently, she serves as a full-time tutor at Phakamani Young Minds Academy (PYMA), part of UJ’s Community Engagement initiative. Her dedication has earned her multiple awards for her contribution to education and community development.
Thandazo is especially passionate about language education and the role it plays in shaping identity, confidence and access to opportunity. She also values Physical Education for promoting teamwork, discipline and learner well-being. Her teaching philosophy centres on inclusion, empathy and learner empowerment. She believes every classroom should be a space where learners feel seen, supported and inspired to grow.
Her goal is to teach in under-resourced schools, uplift marginalized voices and design learning experiences that not only improve academic outcomes but also build strong, confident individuals. For Thandazo, to educate is to empower—and her journey is a testament to the transformative power of purpose-driven teaching.
