One huge aspect of my life that I’ll be talking about is my experience as a musician from 6th grade up until now. I entered middle school with the goal of joining the concert band since my brother did it and I wanted to be just like him. I planned on playing the flute because I went to a band concert and thought that they sounded very pretty. There was an event where you could try out all of the instruments, and I was absolutely awful at the flute; so with that knowledge I went ahead and decided to play it anyway. I even got private lessons during the weekends to help me improve and get better at it. With these lessons, sixth grade was pretty easy, but in 7th grade, I was given the option to pick up a second instrument, and I chose the bassoon. I picked it up much quicker and easier than I did the flute, which was weird because it is known as one of the most difficult instruments in the modern orchestra. I quickly gained more skill on bassoon than I did on flute, and I started auditioning for events like honor bands on it. I decided in high school that I wanted to dedicate my life to music, specifically bassoon, and I wanted to do some sort of music major in college. To prepare for this goal of mine, I started taking private lessons more seriously, auditioning for outside youth orchestras, and more prestigious events like All State, where they pick the top musicians in the entire state of Georgia. I tried to get into All State all four years of high school, and I finally got accepted during my senior year of high school, which was a very rewarding experience. On top of doing that my senior year, it finally came time to audition for colleges, and I got into so many of my dream schools, but had to decide on UGA for its music school, location, and price. Looking back now as a current student, I think I made the correct decision.
