The Academy Schools is a network of schools in Western Pennsylvania that provides education, counseling, rehabilitation, and athletic opportunities for at-risk youth. For over 35 years, The Academy Schools has provided an alternative to institutionalization. The schools have established strong relationships with state court systems, licensing agencies, and community partners. Employing a certified teaching staff backed by credentialed counselors and experts in rehabilitation, the schools aim to help young people who struggle with self-esteem recognize and fulfill their potential.
Based on juvenile justice estimates, 82 percent of students attending programs at The Academy Schools suffer from problems with substance or alcohol abuse prior to placement. Accordingly, Summit Academy and New Outlook Academy offer inpatient drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs which seamlessly integrate into their education programs. The programs are centered around reinforcement of positive performance and prosocial interactions and is staffed by addiction counselors who use various treatment models including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), The Chronic Disease Model, 12-Step Approach, Motivational Interviewing, Trauma Informed Care, education lectures and a multi-family group session. They also offer psychiatric support for students with a dual diagnosis. For non-residential students, the organization offers a community-based drug and alcohol rehabilitation program, which also utilizes a strategic combination of counseling and therapeutic treatment.
Alongside these programs, The Academy Schools requires students to volunteer in their communities, gain exposure to trades such as carpentry, and prepare for college or post-secondary education.
