Growing up around the base of the mountains, I was always told that they were pretty, especially with the sunset behind them. It actually annoyed the hell out of me to hear it from my parents all the time no matter where we were going or what we were doing. I didn’t, and really still don’t, fully understand why they were so intent on telling me this all the time; after all, what is the point of celebrating something static that has always been there and will continue to always be a part of the landscape?
As I was getting ready to start my collegiate career through buying some essentials, I was driving back with my dad when I again heard one of the countless variations of the same idea, “The mountains are really pretty today. Look, they even still have snow on them.” This prompted a variation of the same response that I always give, “Yea, yea I know dad.” Although I live in the future due to the uncertainty and anxiety that it brings, those words always bring me back to the present. It may not be groundbreaking wisdom but what I failed to realize was that the present is here and now whereas the future is just an idea of what life may bring. With that in mind, even I started to admire the mountains that always appear in the horizon.
