Software Engineer and Future Doctor

I have been a Software Engineer professionally since 2014. While attending Eastern Michigan University, trying to determine my path in life, I attending a career fair, and was subsequently hired as an Intern for Lyons Consulting Group in Ann Arbor, MI. While I had pervious experience with programming, from personal and school-related projects, this was my first professional position in Software Engineering. Not knowing for sure what I wanted to pursue, and wanting to save money from working (and not rack up student loans when I didn’t have a clear path to go down), I decided to suspend my schooling while I worked, and continued to ponder what my life was going to have in store for me.

In the years that followed, I moved around to various different Software Engineering jobs. Some with Agencies, some with Clients. A mix of both eCommerce, and traditional Application Development. In 2020, in the midst of the COVID pandemic, I decided to go back to school.

I enrolled at Saginaw Valley State University, where I am currently pursuing my Bachelor of Science degree. I will be majoring in Neuroscience, and completing minors in Chemistry and Public Health; and completing all other relevant prerequisite to be able to apply for Medical School during the 2024/25 application cycle.

So why Neuroscience?

I love Computer Science, and am fascinated by how computers work, but when taking more time to think about the type of path I would like to go down, I realized that the most interesting topic to me is not computers, but our brain. Our brain is basically the computer of the human body, and I think that’s spectacular. So now I’m going to study it. At the moment I do not have a specific area of interest within the field, but am interested in pursing general research, and finding a specific area of interest.

And why Medicine?

I have always wanted to be a doctor, but because of my circumstances, I always viewed it as a little kid’s dream, instead of something attainable. The decision to transition from my career in Software Engineering into a career in Medicine has been solidified over the past two years due to personal family health issues, public health issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and simply realizing I only have one life to live, and I want to make the most of it while I’m here.

Feel free to send me a message if you'd like to chat more about my experience and path moving forward.
