In February 2014, Karen Lewis joined Drexel University as VP for External Affairs, where she provides strategic leadership related to local community/civic associations, government and elected officials. Ms. Lewis is responsible for the development and cultivation of external relationships, working closely with the President’s executive team bridging university partnerships and effective relationships focused on engagement. Representing the university at various civic and community events, Ms. Lewis also serves as a point of contact to local government and elected officials. Additionally, Ms. Lewis serves as a liaison to University Communications for public relations and marketing activities, and is responsible for planning and implementation of policies and procedures that pertain to community relations.
Prior to becoming VP at Drexel University, Karen Lewis served as Executive Director for the Avenue of the Arts, Inc. (AAI), a nonprofit organization spearheading the revitalization and economic development of a four and half mile segment of Broad Street in Philadelphia. Serving as the nonprofit’s CEO, Ms. Lewis was responsible for overall management and strategic initiatives, including fiscal and operational oversight. During her 13-year tenure, Ms. Lewis was recognized as a leader in the formation of arts/entertainment districts, served as a conference presenter in Chile, Canada, Vancouver and several US cities. She is credited with managing and securing funding for a $13 million dollar streetscape enhancement project, and multi-year grants from both local and state governments.
Ms. Lewis has led a distinguished career in the nonprofit and public sectors, working to advocate for cultural and educational institutions, tourism, community/civic organizations and elected officials. She is a passionate and enthusiastic leader dedicated to improving the economic and cultural fabric of the region. Ms. Lewis is an adept tactical thinker motivated by implementation and execution of goals. She has earned the admiration of her peers and is a respected administrator within nonprofit and public sectors, leading external initiatives and program development to increase awareness, while building crucial relationships to advance the organization’s mission.
