The Unlikely Athlete

Los Angeles, California

Growing up, I was anything but athletic. Lanky, awkward, clumsy, and constantly running into things, my parents put me in ballet hoping I would gain some element of grace (or at least not be a walking liability). As a kid, I HATED gym class where I was always picked next to last for teams. At different stages of my youth, I tried my hand at soccer, swimming, and track but always faced a barrier of entry (read: I was TERRIBLE). Fitness can be intimidating if you are not a natural born athlete! I also had an unfortunate habit of associating exercise with physical appearances rather than focusing on heath and wellness. It was not until I was an adult that I discovered running as a means for managing stress and gaining focus. The key was starting small. A couch to 5k program got me to my first race (which I actually only signed up for because a beer garden was promised at the end - ha!). But I became hooked. I ran a 10k, then a couple half marathons, then a marathon. I also started supplementing my running regimen with a broad range of fitness classes and strength training. And somewhere along the way I unleashed a healthier, happier version of myself!

Today, I am a fitness junkie, wellness advocate, and certified running coach. By blogging as The Unlikely Athlete, I hope to reach other un-athletes out there who haven't yet realized their full potential for health and wellness.
