Greetings and welcome to This Seasons Vegan!
Veganism has been a part of my life for the last ten years, ever since my second year at University where my eyes were opened to the realities of dairy farming; the ill-treatment of animals in the production of dairy products. From the age of 12 I decided to become a Vegetarian – a school visit took me to a farm where I was able to see lambs being born, only then realising the link between the lamb I saw bought into the world, with the lamb that would be served on my plate at Sunday lunch. I have never been a radical veggie/vegan – I have never advocated against the eating of meat or dairy and I would never seek to tell anyone what they should or should not eat. Being a Vegan is a personal choice of mine and I feel gratified with the choices in which I have made.
For the first few years, veganism was tough. I was struggling student with a full-time job and therefore did not have a lot of time to stop for meals, and when I did I was unsure of what I could and could not eat. My diet therefore was very basic and albeit pretty tasteless.
It was not until after I graduated from University and embarked on my first working winter season in the French Alps that I really began to struggle. The supermarkets were not particularly veggie friendly, let a lone Vegan friendly, and almost all of the restaurants I tried within the resort had absolutely no idea what a vegan was – I spent most of that winter living on basic salads, and I ask the seasoned Vegan: who wants to live off salad when it is snowing and -15 degrees outside?! During those 5 months, I really felt the need for a stodgier, richer, healthier diet – the skiing everyday, the working 60+ hours a week, they all took their toll on my energy levels.
So 6 years on, 5 winter seasons later, I have decided to create this blog to show how vegans can cope with the season lifestyle. My recipes are for people on the go all the time, who do not have much time to cook, but who want to eat delicious and satisfying meals, for those who are on a tight budget but who want to eat more than a diet of tinned beans and salad.
My blog will give seasonal based recipes, tips, lifestyle guides and more. It is my Vegan journey and I hope you will benefit from my experiences as well as my taste!
