Hi, I am Nompilo Thobeka Mkhize aged 21 and I’m a third year Senior and Further Education and Training Student teacher in the University of Johannesburg specialising in English and History. From a very young age I have always had a passion for teaching— throughout my school years I was always passionate about educating myself as well as people around me. As an aspiring educator I believe that education is not only limited to the classroom but accumulating education should enable one to solve life problems even in reality and shape one’s mind and behaviour both in the education context and in reality in a good manner, therefore, I’m a firm believer that education, when facilitated correctly has the ability to improve the society and promote equality for all regardless of their background.

As a student teacher I advocate for the importance of a balanced education between learner centred and teacher centred. Both the teacher and the learners should have equal power and control over the learning processes. I believe that in order to achieve meaningful learning the teacher as a facilitator should actively guide learners through the suggested learning processes while not sidelining the duty of learners. Learners should also be given voice over their education and how they prefer to learn, this will improve meaningful learning and promote equality in the educational context.

One of the ways in which I promote meaningful learning is by encouraging learners to always voice out their opinions because I strongly believe that learners, adolescents specifically have sharp minds that can reason and come up with critical solutions and useful information. Therefore, in my practice I always ensure that I create an environment that promotes self expression and integrate tasks and activities that require learners to express themselves. In this manner I believe that learning becomes meaningful for the learners.
