Thomas James, Thomas B. James, Tom James – all names lead to me. I am a teacher, writer, and attorney at the Law Office of Tom James currently living in Cokato, Minnesota. One of my earliest victories as an attorney was Ellshoff v. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which was written up in a Washington Post article. I am also proud of my First Amendment win for a client. Another case. My interests range from photography to legal research and entrepreneurship. I am also interested in hiking, running, and education.
When I am not practicing law, I am either writing books and articles or teaching. You can read about my books on my Amazon Author Page here or here. Way back in 2003, I wrote a book about domestic violence research, but my most significant book is E-Commerce-Law.I have won several awards and honors. Most recently, I received the National Parents Organization Shared Parenting Research Award for my law review article in the Georgia State University Law Review (vol. 42, 2026).

Although I am an attorney, I am also a teacher of CLE and TESOL/TEYL/TBE classes. For a list of courses I have taught, visit the Tom James Law course list. In 2023, I presented on “Protecting Trademarks and Names” for Twin Cities Startup Week. I have also developed courses on such varied topics as bias, child custody, and trauma. I have been an adjunct professor at Minnesota State University.
