Thomas DeFanti MD

Thomas DeFanti, MD, began his career in medicine at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vermont, where he studied biology and philosophy. After graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts, Dr. DeFanti spent a year studying biobehavioral sciences at the University of Connecticut. He subsequently enrolled at the Georgetown University School of Medicine in the nation’s capital. After obtaining his Doctor of Medicine in 1981, Dr. DeFanti joined Maine Medical Center to complete his residency in family medicine in 1984.

From 1984 to 1987, Thomas DeFanti, MD, served Native American communities as a Family Practitioner with the Indian Health Service in Minnesota and Arizona. In 1987, he moved back to New England and spent three more years training at Maine Medical Center, where he specialized in obstetrics and gynecology. In addition to being elected to the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, Thomas DeFanti, MD, became the first resident at the institution to gain certification in laser and laparoscopic surgery.

Dr. DeFanti subsequently established his own private practice in Biddeford, Maine, providing services to the community for three years. In 2000, Thomas DeFanti, MD, and other local practitioners in Biddeford coalesced to form PrimeCare Physicians, a multidisciplinary group practice. After serving the facility for five years, Dr. DeFanti accepted a position as an Obstetrics/Gynecology Consultant with The Medical Group in Kennebunk, Maine, where he performed low-risk obstetrical and office based gynecological care and organized an HPV vaccination program. Since December 2010, Thomas DeFanti, MD, has overseen the detoxification unit at the Stonington Institute.
