Thomas Pepin
Founder of Pepin Family Foundation in Tampa, Florida, United States
Thomas Pepin, better known as Tom Pepin, is a business leader and philanthropist from the Tampa Bay region whose work has influenced many areas of the community, including commerce, education, healthcare, and public safety. Over several decades, he has combined business leadership with a steady commitment to supporting local institutions and organizations. He previously served as President and CEO of Pepin Distributing Company, where he expanded the family business while maintaining a focus on community responsibility and long-term relationships.
Tom Pepin returned to Florida after completing his education at Middlebury College in Vermont. After graduating, he joined the family business and began working within Pepin Distributing Company. In 1986, he purchased the company from his father and began leading its next stage of growth.
During his leadership, the company expanded into one of Florida’s largest beverage distribution operations. It developed strong partnerships with major beverage manufacturers and grew into an enterprise valued at approximately $260 million. The organization earned a reputation for disciplined operations, reliable distribution services, and strong ties with businesses throughout the region.
While guiding the company’s growth, Thomas also encouraged a culture of community support. Pepin Distributing regularly contributed to nonprofit organizations, civic programs, and initiatives that assist first responders. This approach helped ensure that the company remained connected to the community and contributed to projects that benefit the Tampa Bay area.
One of his notable contributions to the region is the T. Pepin Hospitality Centre. Tom created this facility to provide nonprofit organizations with access to a professional venue for fundraising events and community gatherings. The goal was to make a high-quality event space available to organizations at costs that remain reasonable for nonprofit groups.
Education has also been an important focus of his work. When several families approached him about children struggling in traditional classroom settings, Thomas's family helped support the creation of Pepin Academies. These public charter schools were designed to support students with specific learning disabilities, including dyslexia and ADHD.
For more than twenty-five years, Pepin Academies have provided individualized education programs that help students build confidence and develop important life skills. The schools emphasize accountability and personal growth while offering a supportive learning environment. Over time, the academies have helped thousands of students find success in their education.
Healthcare has been another area of involvement. Through the Pepin Heart Institute, Thomas helped support cardiovascular research, patient care, and educational programs related to heart health. These efforts have led to partnerships with leading medical institutions across the Tampa Bay region and have helped expand access to essential healthcare resources. His contributions in this field earned recognition as Healthcare Philanthropist of the Year.
Public safety has also remained a consistent priority in his philanthropic efforts. Tom has supported initiatives connected with the Tampa Police Department Chief's Foundation and other law enforcement programs. These initiatives focus on officer wellness, family assistance, and programs that strengthen relationships between police officers and the communities they serve. His support for these programs earned him recognition as the Tampa Police Department Citizen of the Year and the twentieth Lightning Community Hero.
After selling Pepin Distributing Company, Thomas entered a new phase of leadership, centered on long-term stewardship of family resources and charitable initiatives. To support this work, he created Tapper Ventures and the Pepin Family Office. These organizations coordinate investments, philanthropic activities, and strategic planning for projects that align with the family’s values.
His work has received recognition from several institutions. In 2017, Thomas was inducted into the Business Hall of Fame for his contributions to business and community service. The Florida Senate has acknowledged his civic involvement on multiple occasions. The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners also recognized his decades of community commitment. In 2023, Temple Park was renamed to honor the Pepin family’s contributions to the region.
Friends and colleagues often describe him as steady, direct, and committed to the relationships he builds. His career reflects long-term dedication rather than short-term success. Through business leadership, community investment, and support for education and healthcare, Thomas Pepin has contributed to many institutions across Tampa Bay, and his lasting community impact is felt throughout the region.
