Thomas Weisel
Thomas W. Weisel graduated from Stanford University with honors and distinctions in Economics; he also earned an MBA from Harvard University. He continues to support both institutions as well as several secondary schools in the Bay Area, California. In addition to his philanthropic efforts targeted at education, Thom Weisel has donated over 200 works of Native American art to the DeYoung Museum of Fine Arts through the Weisel Family Art Foundation, his own organization. He has promised or gifted works from many artists to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the New York Museum of Modern Art. He also serves as Chairman of the Committee of Trustees at the SFMOMA.
Professionally, Thom Weisel serves as an entrepreneur and investment banker. He is the founder of Montgomery Securities and Thomas Weisel Partners. Montgomery Securities grew to a worth of $700 million under his guidance, and the Montgomery Asset Management and Investment Bank branches were sold to Bank of America for $1.5 billion in 1997. Thomas Weisel Partners, which garnered $500 million in revenue in its first year, was sold to Stifel for $450 million in 2010.
Thom Weisel is also activein sports. He has served on the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team Board since 1977,also serving as its Chairman from 1983-1994, during which time he merged theU.S. Ski Team with the U.S. Ski Association to modernize the structure andfunding of the organizations. Since then, the U.S. Ski Team has won moreOlympic medals than the ski team of any other nation. Thom Weisel is the founderand Chairman of the U.S. Cycling Foundation Board, where he also introducedadministrative changes to the foundation that garnered a U.S. Cycling Endowmentof $20 million as of this year.
