Third of four children of rocket designer & painter (theatre scenery, landscape and portraits) and gardener. Late developer ... at school in Buxton, Derbyshire, interests in wargames, music, reading (SF - Wyndham, Asimov) sailing & canoeing - theatre, art & sciences, boatbuilding, leading to A&D Foundation Studies in Yarmouth, Norfolk; Industrial Design in Birmingham (inspired by Tatlin, Rodchenko & the Vhkutemas - OU Design Faculty and Design Research in RCA London - individually; Papanek, Fuller, Durden, Black, Woudhuysen, Archer, Lansdown and Mallen) student induction to anti-discrimination politics led to London and the next step; history, freedom struggles, marxist humanism, critical history of technology research, publishing and teaching design and typography, design management & new media. At Reading, Leicester, the Type Museum and then City & Guilds of London Art School teaching design, typography & media. Other interests include object oriented design, modelling methods, critical technology history & innovation. My Partner Sara is a teacher/practitioner/maker in marketing, design management, puppetry automata and object theatre and our eight year old Alex is already a creative, and proud owner of a white Strat copy and a brother named Rory James - after two great virtuosi.
