Bone Marrow and Bone marrow transplant!!

The soft spongy tissue that occurs in the long bones of the human body is the bone marrow. The main function of bone marrow is to produce new blood cells. The Hip bone or thigh bone has bone marrow in it.

Types of Bone marrow:

There are two types of bone marrows. These include:

Red marrow which produces red blood cells, white blood cells and blood platelets.

Yellow marrow which includes fat cells

The bone marrow has stem cells. The stem cells have capability of forming various cells of the body. These stem cells are immature. They can develop into red blood cells, white blood cells or even platelets.

The red blood cells supply oxygen to various parts of the body

White blood cells are useful to fight infections

Platelets are responsible to control bleeding

If one suffers with diseases of bone marrow, their bone marrow tissue may be required to get diagnosed. This is done by a biopsy method. This procedure involves use of a needle that is inserted into the bone to withdraw a sample of bone marrow tissue. Usually such a procedure can be very painful and traumatic.

The diseases which could be an outcome of bone marrow trouble are leukemia, anemia, and multiple myeloma.

Leukemia may cause abnormal growth of white blood cells.

Anemia which is aplastic is an outcome of no production of red blood cells by the bone marrow.

The bone marrow of a person who has undergone chemotherapy may have gone deteriorated or suppressed. Thus causing complications like anemia, low platelet count, WBC count. Such conditions can become life threatening.

In such instances if the quality of bone marrow goes low, a bone marrow transplant can be done. Medications or blood transfusion may also be done in instances where a bone marrow disease has occurred.

How is bone marrow transplant done?

This involves transfer of stem cells from bone marrow of a healthy person’s body to the bone marrow of diseased person.

Sometimes bone marrow from a different part of the same body may also be utilized for the purpose of transplantation.
