I lead the Civic Leadership Project and DC Tutoring and Mentoring Initiative, my effort to get a tutor or mentor for every student reading below grade level or with other needs, and, in the process, to create a civic culture in which people take more responsibility for their communities. In May 2016, I left the Washington, DC-based Urban Institute's Center on Nonprofits & Philanthropy/National Center for Charitable Statistics after 20 years.

I am also president of the Martin Pollak Project and its Project Northstar tutoring and mentoring program based in Baltimore.

I have my undergrad degree from the University of the State of New York and my law degree from Georgetown.
