Tone Kang

Tone Kang born Joseph Martin King of Joliet Illinois, started out in music at an early age. As a child (too young to know the titles of songs) his parents would take him to the local record store (duke’s Records) where he would sing the songs to Mr. Duke in order to purchase the song he wanted. He would passionately lip sync songs in front of friends and family during cookouts and get-togethers. When asked at age 11 what he wanted to be when he grow up. His responds was “a M. C.”(Microphone Controller / or Master of Ceremonies). Just one block behind the church was a housing project where he would go and hangout after church, gaining friendship with local gang members and drug dealers. He became immersed in the African-American subculture of that time.

They recorded one track simply entitled “let My Nuts Go”, which was unreleased due to the masters being lost. After becoming a high school dropout and a twenty year bought with personal issues, Joseph reemerged with a new name “Tone Kang”, a name that he took from his grandfather, Tom King. An Immigrant, coming from the Mississippi back woods of the Jim Crow South, His grandfather’s name was pronounced Tone Kang due to the southern draw of their vernacular and diction. Joseph took up his grandfather’s name due to the royalty he felt being the grandchild of uneducated self made business man.
