Reuters received a gold award for its report on health insurers dropping patients after they were diagnosed with breast cancer.
Reuters' four-month investigation, by Lewis Krauskopf and Washington-based reporter Murray Waas, revealed that a giant health insurer had targeted policyholders recently diagnosed with breast cancer for aggressive investigations. A study of records led to the story by Lewis Krauskof and Murray Waas.
“We published the Murray Waas story and the reaction was swift,” said editor Claudia Parsons “Congressional Democrats urged insurers to stop”
The fourth annual Barlett & Steele Awards for Investigative Business Journalism were presented today.
Murray Waas is himself a cancer survivor, active on behalf of cancer patients. ■
